This is a fun, unique story that really stands out from other children's books. Even as an adult, you'll find yourself swept up in the action, eagerly awaiting each new twist and turn in this little guy's adventure. Daralyn has a charming writing style that somehow manages to be mature yet completely relatable to kids of all ages. It's an underwater adventure they'll want to read over and over again.
Having just finished reading "Alex and the New Shell" for the fifth time, i'm still finding wonderment with the sea creatures he meets on his journey ... this is a thought provoking story about a little hermit crab whose life continues to amaze me. It's fun and amazing, it's a true connected story, in more ways than one.

I have had the opportunity to read this book to the children in my granddaughters classes at school for the last two years.
The children love the story and the pictures are great.
The last time I read the story, it prompted some of the kids to go hunting for information about how a pearl is made in an oyster.
The story tells of one helping another and being patient and sparks curiosity.
Next year, I will get the book out again and the year after that.
I just purchased the book to place int he school library.
Alex and the New Shell by Daralyn Brody is an adventure story and a delightful way to introduce young children to the amusing ways of hermit crabs. Alex needs a new shell for a home because he is getting bigger but, as the author explains, while a hermit crab will grow, its shell will not. If you assumed that all crabs formed their own shells as exoskeletons (as this reviewer did) you will be both surprised and somewhat dismayed that these little guys have to go hunting for their "homes." Fortunately the sea shore is littered with empty shells and after a few adventures Alex finds the perfect answer to meet the needs of his life style.
Hermit crabs are fascinating, inexpensive, relatively carefree pets. The Web features innumerable sites dedicated to the care of these funny little creatures and a half hour watching them in a pet store will convince even the most obdurate dog lover that there are other animals with charm who neither shed nor bark.
With the holiday season coming up, keep in mind the perfect combination gift of Alex and the New Shell with a trip to a pet store to introduce a child to these little crustaceans. After you've stopped sneezing from those darling kittens you're allergic to, and mentally added up the grooming costs of that adorable Bernedoodle, consider the quiet enjoyment of a few ever-so-social hermit crabs sideling their way over and under and all around a simple little glass aquarium always on the lookout for a new "home."
